6.S092 The Art and Science of PCB Design

This class took place during 2023 IAP (Independent Activities Period) (4-week winter term). Through the class, we designed and fabricated a PCB from scratch, including schematic capture, board layout, assembly, and debugging. The PCB was for a bluetooth speaker. As we only had 4 weeks, the project was already designed for us.

Layout

After creating the schematics, we created layout in Altium Designer. This was my first layout ever, it's certainly not pretty.

Fabrication

Because the class is on a tight schedule, we fabricated boards laid out by the course staff (much prettier than mine). We squeezed solder paste through a template for the board, carefully placed components using tweezers, and used a reflow oven (and fixed connections with a microscope and soldering iron).

Case

The next step (which I've let sit on the backburner ever since), is make a case for it. Here's my design, I just need a lot of printing time. The fire hydrant is inspired by former MIT President ['71-'80] Jerome Weisner's quote:``Getting an Education from MIT is like taking a drink from a Fire Hose.''
